My Official Response to the Apple iPad

E-mail Print

Well, the iPad has been upon us for a week now and most of you have had time to mull over what it means for the tech industry. I actually wrote a little opinion piece last week about how ridiculous speculating about the iPad was. After having watched the entire press event live, as it turns out, the iPad is quite a bit different from what many people expected. For starters, nobody really speculated that Apple would come up with a name that would be the butt of jokes about female hygiene. Then there is the blatant lack of even simple things we take for granted on netbooks and computers today; simple things like flash and multitasking.

Now in fact I'm not really very funny, so rather than even trying to sum up the things the iPad lacks in writing, I'll simply consult Hitler himself:

Now of course the iPad will be a smash hit. It's coming in at a $499 price point of the 16GB non-3G model. But more importantly it has the backing of the App Store, iTunes and a new eBook store Apple will be launching. Apple's biggest advantage in this game comes down to their strengths in content distribution. The iPad will be a device that people will use to consume content, nothing more. And for the consumer space, that's exactly what's needed.

Apple Censors the Dictionary!

Apple iPhoneWhat? Yeah, Apple has decided to help protect its users by taking 2 months to finally approve the Ninjawords dictionary App for its popular iPhone and iTouch platform. As it turns out, the only way that the developer could get his great app approved was if he removed words which Apple deemed offensive.

Now I can understand people being offended by things like baby shakers and porn, but trying to censor a dictionary? Come on, I can't think of even one person who might find any dictionary even remotely offensive.

Then again, hearing stories like this are hardly surprising: it has always been part of Apple's corporate culture to be incredibly cryptic in their procedures and the company has traditionally been far from shy to do things exactly how it wants. At this point though, with so many major debacles with AT&T, lock-in and senseless app refusals, I'm starting to think that maybe users and developers alike should start pursuing other, more open alternatives like the Pre or Android. Sure, the developer ecosystem isn't in place yet and the neither of those platforms is even close to as big as Apple's, but imagine how liberating and less stressful it would be for developers if they didn't have to go through an inane approval process to make a living.

Apple is really going to have to do something about this because it started out being laughable and it's finally worked its way up to just plain ridiculous. Rather than protecting the user base, it's purposefully restricting what they can do. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot...

iPorn for your iPhone!

Yep, Apple has actually approved an app with nudity in it for the first time this week called "Hottest Girls". It's an incredibly rudimentary app which simply downloads pictures of hot, topless girls from a server to your iPhone. There was some confusion this morning regarding the approval status of the app since it disappeared from the app store today after having been approved just a few days ago.

All that has been cleared up after the developer announced that they pulled their own application as a result of excessive load on their servers causing issues with loading the images. Go figure... They also stated that they value the quality of the service provided to their customers more than the revenue they make from the $1.99 application which is why it was temporarily pulled.
